Behind the imposing title lies a textbook of clinical physiology plus chapters on cytology (genetics, immunology), general pathology (wound healing, shock, etc.), clinical oncology, clinical microbiology, and statistics. Some emphasis on topics of special importance in surgery; for example, more space is given to sterilization than to antibiotics. Great variation in quality of chapters; some authors have not resisted temptations to slip in therapeutic advice.
The sketchy treatment of some topics of great importance in internal medicine lowers this book's value for the physician.
