Lung capillary blood flow, using the N2O-body plethysmograph method, was measured simultaneously with pulmonary artery, pulmonary wedge, and left atrial pressures during routine cardiac catheterization to study changes in capillary flow due to alterations in pulmonary arterial and pulmonary venous impedance. Normally the compliant arterial system stores up to 67% of the stroke volume during systole for delivery to the capillaries during diastole. In pulmonary arterial hypertension this is reduced, and the increased arteriolar resistance reduces the pulsatility of capillary flow.
