Perfusion of human and porcine spleens ex vivo with various types of priming volumes has confirmed that the spleen is a major potential source of antihemophilic factor (AHF). The response of the spleen is dependent on a trophic factor in the plasma of patients with hemophilia. Thus, normal autologous, homologous, or heterologous blood primes did not evoke a rise in the level of AHF in the perfusing volume.
