Granulocytes are rich in lactic dehydrogenase (LDH) isoenzymes 4 and 5, whereas 1 and 2 predominate in brain tissue. Measurement of total LDH and isoenzyme patterns was undertaken to provide an assessment of the degree of inflammation and its significance in bacterial and viral meningitis. Specimens of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) were obtained from 11 patients with bacterial meningitis and 9 patients with viral meningoencephalitis, and total and isoenzyme concentrations of LDH were determined.
