Immune mechanisms following a streptococcus infection are thought to initiate acute rheumatic fever, although the nature of these events are not understood. Of great importance is the demonstration of cross-reactivity between components of the streptococcus and cardiac myofibrils or glycoproteins. This report describes an immunologic relation between streptococcal hyaluronate and proteinpolysaccharides of connective tissue. Human cartilage proteinpolysaccharides contains at least two antigenic components: one is species specific; the other is present in cartilage proteinpolysaccharides from many different species (human, cow, pig, shark, etc.). Hyaluronateprotein isolated from human synovial fluid cross-reacts with the common site of cartilage proteinpolysaccharides. With this information
