A retrospective clinical and biochemical study of 136 patients with metabolic bone disease has shown that 6 out of 91 patients with primary hyperparathyroidism and at least 20 out of 45 patients with osteomalacia developed remediable proximal muscle weakness. Myopathy may occur as a presenting complaint in the absence of symptoms or signs of bone disease and may deceptively simulate primary muscular disorders. Proximal muscular weakness was independent of plasma calcium and electrolyte concentrations.
