Five years have passed since publication of the first edition of this multiauthored textbook on renal disease. Seventeen of the 29 chapters have been written on new topics or by different authors, and the second edition should readily find its way into the libraries of many clinicians and medical students.
It is not difficult to choose the most enjoyable chapter. Heptinstall's discussion of the pathological diagnosis of chronic pyelonephritis has replaced an equally delightful chapter by Oliver in the first edition. Another impressive contribution is Beeson's concise and informative summary of pyelonephritis. Special commendation should also be directed to Relman
