The heart and pericardium are generally thought to be resistant to the effects of ionizing radiation.
Three patients who developed chronic pericarditis with pericardial effusion after multiple courses of radiation therapy to the mediastinum are presented, and the difficulties involved in establishing the diagnosis and cause of the pericardial effusions are discussed.
