A program of "satellite" hemodialysis has been developed in which maintenance chronic intermittent hemodialysis is administered to patients in private hospitals that collaborate closely with a hemodialysis center. During the past 18 months, 37 patients have received over 2,700 dialysis treatments in 7 satellite units for a total experience of 317 patient-months.
Clinical results in patients treated in satellite units compared with other patients treated exclusively in the center are similar in almost all features. Satellite dialysis allows considerable flexibility in patient selection and potential interchange of patients between dialysis and transplantation programs.
