In 1946, Dr. Eugene A. Stead, Jr., became the Florence McAlister Professor and Chairman of the Department of Medicine at Duke University. Within 10 years, however, he was talking about retiring. Throughout the late 1950's and early '60's Dr. Stead repeatedly reaffirmed his intentions not to continue as Chairman of the Department after his 60th birthday, October 6, 1968.
