To the Editor: In a recent Question of the Month (Rheumatology, Ann. Intern. Med. 68: 137, 1968) reference was made to the cause of a "biological false-positive test for syphilis" found in a "23-year-old asymptomatic woman as part of a premarital test." On the following four causal possibilities—systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), subacute bacterial endocarditis, atypical pneumonia, and postnecrotic cirrhosis—the correct answer, as given in a subsequent issue of the ANNALS, was SLE and atypical pneumonia. This answer was obviously incomplete, as, in fact, all of the listed possibilities have been associated with the biological false-positive serology for syphilis (BFP).
