Most of this volume deals selectively with chemical mediators of inflammation, their isolation, characterization, and elucidation of their mechanisms of action. The authors emphasize the minimal criteria for identifying a substance as a mediator of the inflammatory process and the requirements for testing of antiinflammatory drugs. In these contexts they stress the need for understanding the sequential and often independent vascular and cellular events in inflammation, perhaps the most valuable contribution of this presentation.
