An episode of acute hemolysis complicating infectious hepatitis in a patient with documented glucose-6 phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency was predicted. Rapid diagnosis and treatment of transient renal failure, consisting of fluid solute diuresis, prevented any permanent recognizable changes in renal function. The value of a quantitative G6PD test is emphasized. Various aspects of G6PD-associated hemolysis and the mechanism of renal insult are discussed.
