A revised edition of The Surgeon's Tale. This history of surgery, prepared for laymen, opens in the early nineteenth century (anesthesia, Lister, etc.) and closes with organ transplantation and other current developments. Although it descends occasionally into the geewhiz style, it can be recommended to the premedical undergraduate or preclinical medical student as a readable, comprehensive sketch of the growth of surgery since the development of general anesthesia. Subject and name indexes.
