From studies in man we obtained evidence that the transport mechanism for the neutral amino acid, L-methionine, varied with intestinal site SCHEDL, et al.: J. Clin. Invest. 47: 417, 1968). This was further explored in the rat using the model amino acid, alpha-aminoisobutyric acid (AIB). AIB participates in neutral amino acid transport mechanisms but is not metabolized, thus permitting dissociation of transport processes from metabolism. AIB given parenterally was allowed to equilibrate in the body, and its secretion into the intestinal lumen of proximal and midsegments was monitored during recirculation of isotonic saline through the lumen.
