Chromosomal studies were performed in 76 cases of chronic myelocytic leukemia (initial diagnosis) using a direct technique for examination of bone marrow cells, except for a few cases in which resort to study of cultured peripheral blood cells was necessary. Of the 76 patients, 49 were Ph1-positive. These included 1 whose final clinical diagnosis was myeloblastic leukemia, 1 with erythroleukemia, and 3 with myeloid metaplasia; 44 patients (90%) were classified as having unequivocal chronic myelocytic leukemia. The 27 Ph1-negative patients included 4 whose final diagnosis was myeloblastic leukemia, 2 with eosinophilic leukemia, 1 with myeloid metaplasia, and 2 with leukemoid
