Androgens have been shown to increase erythropoietin production in various species of mammals, including man. Although patients with anemias responsive to testosterone often have high plasma erythropoietin levels before treatment, androgens result in further elevation of these levels and probably thereby stimulate erythropoiesis. In 1937 Selye reported that androgens caused renal hypertrophy. Since the kidneys are the main site of erythropoietin production, the effects of testosterone on the kidneys and on erythropoietin production may be related. Studies were performed to clarify this relationship.
