Progress in alcoholism research has been slow because of the lack of a suitable animal model of the alcohol withdrawal syndrome. This is the first description of an alcohol withdrawal syndrome induced in animals drinking alcohol. A liquid diet containing 40% calories as ethanol was the only source of calories and fluids for 20 adult female ICR mice for 3 months. The mice lost weight, from 27 to 30 g at the beginning of the experiment to 20 to 30 g at the time of withdrawal.
