In 1965 Blumberg and associates reported the finding of a new antigen (Australia antigen (Au)) in sera of patients with leukemia. Since then we have published a large body of evidence—including clinical, laboratory, and liver biopsy material—pointing to an intimate relationship of Au with both acute hepatitis and chronic anicteric hepatitis. When viewed under the electron microscope Au is a particle 200 A in diameter and has a number of characteristics that one would expect of a virus particle.
