Group Health Insurance, Inc., is the largest independent, nonprofit fee-for-service plan for insuring physician services in the United States. It covers over a million persons in the New York-New Jersey metropolitan area. It is unique in that it provides insurance for "comprehensive" services—that is, physician services in home, office, and hospital as contrasted with most fee-for-service health insurance plans that provide mainly for services while in the hospital.
Thus, Group Health Insurance experience provides a valuable source of information in treated morbidity and physician utilization patterns as they occur in a large population being cared for under the predominant mode
