Detailed reviews of current knowledge and concepts of membrane structure and function with particular emphasis on transport and absorption. The chapter of interest to clinicians is the summary by Leon E. Rosenberg of those genetic disorders (such as cystinuria, renal glucosuria, and hereditary spherocytosis) in which defects in transmembrane transport are central features. This chapter is not a detailed review but is useful for its emphasis on the membrane defect and clear statements of limits of present knowledge.
