Dr. Barach's book is an account of his program for rehabilitating patients with chronic obstructive lung disease. The main purpose of the program is to increase the patient's capacity for physical exertion. In this regard, Dr. Barach appropriately directs attention to the value of oxygen-supported exercise but places undue emphasis upon diaphragmatic breathing, leaning forward posture, abdominal supports, and elimination of neck and shoulder girdle respiration. Organization of the subject is poor, and the information presented is neither new or timely.
