The concept of autoimmunity has been widely and hotly debated during the last 10 years. There is no doubt that this has facilitated our understanding of many phenomena of immunologic disease, but it has also contributed to confusion and misunderstandings, frequently minimized by designating them "semantic." But one might ask how useful is a term if its meaning has to be explained whenever it is used, and how satisfactory is the concept if the general criteria for its application are not clearly defined.
