An integration of descriptive and mathematically analytic biochemistry and physiology of cells, tissues, and subcellular systems. Organ functions get minor attention, as in the eight-page section on the vertebrate kidney. Genetic topics appropriately emphasized, in contrast to the space they might have received 30 years ago. Historical introductions to several chapters maintain the perspective too often missing from textbooks in "new science." Effectively illustrated and attractively designed.
