The second volume of a series of three tomes on "Infectious Diseases," edited by Drs. O. Gsell and W. Mohr, deals with disorders caused by bacteria. It is a modern textbook of infectious diseases, with individual chapters written in German by experts, and is well produced. The progress made in infectious diseases is indicated by the recurrence of the same increasingly rare illustrations of some diseases (compare, for instance, scarlet fever here with the chapter on infectious diseases in Handbuch der Kinderheilkunde, 1963), but this also raises the question as to how frequently such expensive books should be published.
