To the editor: A case of lactic acidosis is described in the September issue (OLIVA PP, SCHWARTZ HA: Survival of a patient with spontaneous lactic acidosis). The report describes the patient as one who developed this condition "spontaneously." However, she had lost 25 lb, as she had been eating poorly. My patient with lactic acidosis, who did not survive despite heroic doses of alkali, was on a crash reducing diet before the onset of her condition (Fatal lactic acidosis during a "crash" reducing diet. NY J Med, August 15, 1967).
