The first instance of a broken Sommer pacemaker electrode and the successful retrieval of the separated intracardiac segment without thoracotomy is reported. Previous episodes of cardiac catheter breakage and methods for nontraumatic removal are described. An outline for avoiding such mishaps and an approach for their management if they do occur is presented.
