The purpose of this study was to standardize a simple clinical test to assess left ventricular response to the neurohumoral mediator of the sympathetic nervous system, epinephrine. Its clinical usefulness was tested by applying it in patients with idiopathic hypertrophic subaortic stenosis. Weissler's systolic time intervals were recorded at epinephrine infusion rates of 0.01 through 0.18 µg/kg/min in 14 normal subjects and 9 patients with idiopathic hypertrophic subaortic stenosis. The infusion sequence was repeated after beta blockade with propranolol, 0.1 µg/kg in the idiopathic hypertrophic subaortic stenosis patients.
