Previous studies of cardiac amyloidosis have grouped together patients with both functionally significant (extensive) and insignificant deposits of amyloid in the heart Consequently, the percentage of patients with evidence of cardiac dysfunction has varied widely. This study describes 15 patients (ages 21 to 89 years (average, 56) with extensive cardiac amyloid. The hearts weighed 370 to 700 g (average, 489). In each the cardiac walls were rubbery, inelastic, and infiltrated by amyloid that was also present in mural and valvular endocardium.
