In spite of the intensive research interest shown it, the problem of the manner in which fat mobilization is regulated remains unsolved. It would seem reasonable that one or more humeral or neurohumeral substances signal the breakdown of stored triglyceride and release of fatty acids. In an attempt to gain information relative to human lipolysis, isolated cells were prepared from human adipose tissue obtained from donors undergoing surgery. Cells were incubated with test substances, and glycerol release was used as an index of lipolysis. They were found to respond to fractions of human pituitary powder with thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) activity
