The physiologic sphincter mechanism at the distal end of the esophagus is believed to function as a barrier against the reflux of acid gastric contents into the esophagus. Recent studies have shown that the hormone gastrin has a profound effect on lower esophageal sphincter pressure, with marked increases in sphincter pressure resulting from injection of pentagastrin or after maneuvers known to cause release of endogenous gastrin.
