Respiratory-center drive may be lessened in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. This study reports on the assessment of respiratory-center drive by having patients breathe mixtures of carbon dioxide in increasing concentration with and without helium. With turbulent air flow, helium offers a decrease in airway resistance, and if ventilation rises normally when helium replaces nitrogen in the inspired gas, one can conclude that respiratory-center sensitivity to carbon dioxide is intact.
