The rapid progress in the field of hemodialysis comes clearly to mind when one reads Hoeltzenbein's monograph on this topic published in 1969 and compares it with the present knowledge in the field. In addition, this treatise was written by a surgeon who mostly sees cases of acute renal failure and even these in relatively small numbers. The experience of one of the larger hemodialysis centers in 1 month probably exceeds the total experience of the author as described in this book.
