This manual is supposed to help the practicing physician select antimicrobial agents for certain infectious diseases. Unfortunately, to a considerable degree it fails in this aim because of a number of statements that strike this writer as either erroneous or extremely questionable and that are unsupported by any references to the literature. The references included (and many of these are both current and very useful) appear at the end of the volume under individual antimicrobial agents. For example, documentation with references would be most desirable for surprising statements such as "antihistamines and anticholinergics may interfere with host defense mechanisms."
