A patient died during hemodialysis with the Travenol recirculating single-pass dialyzer after exposure of extracorporeal blood to overheated dialysate. A thermostat failure appears to have been the cause of this dialysis accident. Modifications in the dialysis procedure are presented for prevention of this complication.
