To the editor: Renal chloride wasting in severe potassium depletion in man (Garella and associates in the July 1970 issue of the ANNALS) (1) is similar to that previously described in the rat (2). These animal experiments demonstrated that a renal chloride leak occurred only after depletion of total body potassium by approximately 30%, as judged by measurements of muscle potassium, and was independent of the state of sodium balance. The development and reversal of the chloride wasting occurred coincidentally with the appearance and disappearance of marked histological changes in the collecting ducts.
