The first ileostomy was performed in 1913. Since that time there have been tremendous strides in surgical and medical treatment of ulcerative colitis and advances in the physiology of ileostomy. Nevertheless, the main problem facing physicians today is the more subjective problem of what people with ileostomies think, how they react to their situation, and how best to explain to a patient what will occur after the operation.
