Metabolic studies were performed in three patients with partial lipodystrophy. These studies demonstrated carbohydrate intolerance with insulin resistance, hypertriglyceridemia, hepatic steatosis, decreased response of free fatty acids to infusion of norepinephrine, and decreased response of free fatty acids to infusion of insulin and nicotinic acid. These findings imply a close relationship between partial lipodystrophy and the late-onset form of total lipodystrophy (lipoatrophic diabetes).
