The editors state in the preface to this volume that it is limited to a discussion of recent advances in our understanding of small-bowel disorders. It is a collection of 16 articles by authorities in each area. Chapters 1 to 4 deal with electron microscopy, histochemistry, and the biochemistry of the small intestinal cell. Active transport, cell metabolism, and absorption are treated in little detail. Winawer and Lipkin give a lucid discussion of the current experimental methods for the investigation of cell replication. Chapters 1 to 4 are of interest to the investigator but of lesser value to the clinician.
