Only a deaf, blind, and anosmic American could escape knowing that our land is "seared with trade; bleared, smeared with toil; and wears man's smudge." If "foot [cannot] feel being shod," the nose, ears, eyes, lungs, liver, and psyche can, being largely naked before environmental threats. This clear, specific report to the National Institute of Environmental Health Science reviews the kinds and range of the microbes, toxins, and noxious stimuli from our surroundings that now or may threaten our health. Needs in research and organization to deal with current and future problems are set forth in specific recommendations.
