To the editor: In the November 1970 issue of the ANNALS the Rheumatology Question of the Month (p. 688) presented a 48-year-old man with back pains. Roentgenogram of the spine showed calcification of intervertebral discs. Your answer for further work-up was choice "c." Actually the readers' choices were numbers 1 to 4, thus "c" was a typographical error.
Ochronotic spondylosis is characterized by calcification of the intervertebral discs (1), and I believe the best answer should include both #4 and #2. Sodium hydroxide added to the urine of an ochronotic subject oxidizes the homogentisic acid present in these subjects' urine
