The editors of this new text pledge "to encompass everything that is usually included in the category of 'rheumatism'." This goal can probably no longer be achieved within 600 pages. It might have been approached more practically, however, had greater attention been given to the relative importance of subject matter. The contributors include many leaders of European rheumatology. It seems that their number (59) overwhelmed the editors, so that the final product is characterized by fragmentation, duplication, and omissions but not by comprehensiveness.
