To the editor: As an additional comment on your "Binders vs. Rippers" poll(1), the following may be of interest.
We have recently completed a survey (2) of the self-education patterns of interns, residents, and research fellows in 13 Toronto hospitals and compared these with attending staff physicians in a single hospital (Toronto Western Hospital). Included in the data was information on the number of binders and rippers of general and specialty journals.
The summary (Table 1) indicates that for specialty journals (of which the ANNALS is one), the ratio of rippers to binders was 2.4 to 1, in comparison with
