Thyroid hormones exert effects on virtually every organ and tissue of the body, alter many enzymes, restore growth in thyroidectomized animals, and cause the metamorphosis of tadpoles into frogs.
Seventy-five years after Magnus-Levy (1) discovered that thyroid extract increased oxygen consumption ("metabolism") in both hypothyroid and euthyroid individuals, the mechanism of this phenomenon was still a mystery.
