In vitro studies demonstrated that when serial dilutions of a 1% stock solution of protamine sulfate are added to plasma, the appearance of fibrin strands or gelation (paracoagulation) was specific for fibrin monomers and early fibrin degradation products. The test was sensitive to 1 mg/100 ml fibrin monomers and less than 1 mg/100 ml fibrin degradation products. The test utilizes much lower concentrations of protamine sulfate than previously used, which allows fibrin monomers and early fibrin degradation products to polymerize. Fibrinogen and fibrinogen degradation products did not influence the test. The test was considered positive only when fibrin strands appeared,
