Erythema nodosum has long been recognized as a cutaneous vasculitic manifestation of certain systemic or local inflammatory diseases. Except in epidemics of unusual infections, tuberculosis and streptococcal infections have been the commonest primary diseases, with some geographical variation. No general series of cases has been reported since the control of tuberculosis and the widespread use of antibiotics. This study reviewed the conditions associated with erythema nodosum in the decade 1959 to 1969 as encountered in a general hospital in Rochester, N.Y.
