The present whole-cell cholera vaccine stimulates only antibacterial antibodies and provides limited protection of brief duration. Since the effects of cholera are produced by a protein enterotoxin, it is possible that antitoxic immunity might provide an additional and perhaps more effective means of protection. The protective value of antitoxic immunity was evaluated in a canine model of the disease. Dogs were immunized parenterally with highly purified cholera entertoxin plus adjuvant and given a booster after 28 days. High serum antitoxin titers developed and persisted at 10 times preimmunization values for more than 300 days. Serum vibriocidal antibody titers did not
