Clinical observation of spontaneous regression has suggested the possibility of immunologic host defenses in malignant melanoma and prompted our study of tumor antigens in this disease. Seven melanoma patients have been shown to possess an immunoelectrophoretically homogeneous beta globulin that markedly stimulates DNA synthesis by autologous lymphocytes in culture. Cross-reactivity between lymphocytes from these patients and tumor fluids extracted from a single patient with a cystic melanoma has also been found. Appropriate controls fail to show similar effects. Phytohemagglutinin-M stimulated lymphocytes to a lesser degree than did the tumor extracts.
