Although the Parkinson syndrome caused by manganese exposure was described 130 years ago, recent interest in this entity has occurred because these patients apparently respond to treatment with levodopa. Manganese intoxication in Chilean miners has received extensive coverage, but less well known are the dangers in other parts of the world, including the United States, from processing or handling manganese.
