New developments in the areas of diagnosis, prognosis (that is, genetic counseling), treatment, and prevention in medical genetics are presented. These include appreciation of the importance of genetic heterogeneity, prenatal diagnosis, indicators of susceptibility to disease, and prospects for new forms of treatment of genetic defects. Ten frequent misconceptions in clinical genetics are reviewed.
